Our Vocalist - Talented She Is: Mary Baylor Buie

As I started to write about another family member for this post, I changed my mind and decided to write about my Aunt Mary.

Aunt Mary loved listening and singing gospel music.  Although her fame was not known to the world, she was known for her beautiful soprano voice in church choirs that she belonged.

During my research process, people have commented to me about her voice. They would say “your aunt had some voice”,  “oh she could sing”, what a voice”; I would just smile.   I would hear her sing a few notes around the house, however, I didn’t realize the true gift/talent she had until I saw her sing in church.  I’m certainly glad that I had the opportunity to see her sing; a time that I’ll never forget; Thanks mom for guiding me to that moment; a memory of a lifetime.

Last year I was given a gift.  It was her voice on tape.  I converted it over, and now have the digital version.  A treasure, a voice lost, a recaptured memory.

Mary L. (Baylor) Buie or Lizzie/Buie as some called her was born in Port Royal, Virgina April 12, 1934.   She was my mom’s sister, and the daughter of Ruth Baylor and Charlie Vaughan.  She passed in December 2001.

A few songs that Mary would sing were: Take Me Back, and He Decided To Die.  She had the voice of a songbird.  We had not one, but two tremendous vocalists in the family, Aunt Mary and her 1st cousin, Sarah Vaughan.

The story continues...
